Email Aliases

An email alias is a virtual email account. It enables you to use an email address that doesn’t really exist and have all the messages sent to that address routed to a real email account, which is referred to as the target email. Unlike the real "target" email, an email alias does NOT take up physical space on the mailserver.

For example, you may want to provide a link on your Web site that enables visitors to send email to you but using another email address. You can use the email alias mywebsitename@ Tri Way Net.net but have the email routed to your real email account.

Alias = mynickname@ Tri Way Net.net >> forwards to >> Target = username@ Tri Way Net.net
Alias = username@mydomain.com >> forwards to >> Target = username@ Tri Way Net.net

While you may elect to change the email address to the alias in the "From:" field that is part of your email program configuration options (see configuration section), you should NOT use the username of the email alias - the part of the email address before the @ sign - to log on to the mailserver or Webmail. The email alias, as you recall, is a "virtual" box and you cannot authenticate (log in) to the mailserver with the alias username. You must use the username from the "target" email and it's associated password.

Help us help you! If you contact Tri Way Net support for assistance please write down any error messages you get when trying to connect to the Internet. Include the name and version of your operating system and the exact text of all error messages. If this information is included in an online case submission or provided to a support representative, it will greatly speed up the troubleshooting process.

Please be aware that some troubleshooting may require uninstallation and reinstallation of operating system files. To ensure that this type of troubleshooting can be accomplished if required, please be sure that you have to have original Operating System CD or Operating system source files on disk on hand.
