Using the System File Checker (SFC)

The "System File Checker" utility, available in Windows 98 and up, is used to scan for altered files or extract files. In other Windows flavors, the file extraction feature is part of the System Configuration Utility (msconfig).

Before you begin...

Running a scan and restoring files or extracting a system file requires the original Windows installation CD or disks, or Windows system source (cabinet) files on the computers's hard drive. Tri Way Net cannot be held responsible for any problems with the Windows Network configurations if these items are required but are not supplied at the time of configuration.

  1. Go to Start and click Run. Type "sfc" in the Open: field and hit the Enter key or click OK. Note: In Windows ME, XP,..., type in "msconfig" and hit the Enter key or click OK.

  2. The SFC will scan for altered files and prompt you to restore them if it detects changes or a corrupt file. The SFC also allows you to extract a single system file.

    1. Scan for altered files
To scan for files that have changed, may be corrupted or have been deleted, select the first option.

Before running the scan, click the Settings button at the bottom right of the window to configure the scan to suit your needs. Click OK then click Start to start the scan.

If the SFC detects a file that has changed or has been deleted, you can select what you want to do for that particular file from a list of options.

The SFC will indicate when the scan has been completed. Click the Details button on this notification to see a summary of the scan.

    2. Extract a System File
You may sometimes need to replace a system file that has become corrupted such as winsock.dll or wsock32.dll. Before replacing the file, it is wise to make a backup of the existing file. To make a backup of system files, you must set the option to view these files as they are hidden by default. After you locate the file(s) you want to replace, change the extension to .old or a similar extension.

Select Extract one file... and, in the field under "Specify the system file you would like to restore", type in winsock.dll, wsock32.dll, or another file you need to extract. Click Start.

To restore a system file, browse to location of the system file (cabs) on the Windows CD. Browse to the path where the file taken from the CD should be saved. Click OK.
